9 Contemporary Glass Artists You Need to Know

I think it takes so much, especially with glassblowing; the labor is hard to compare with other materials. It’s not for no reason that they call glassblowers “the truck drivers of the art world.” For my own sake, it’s that understanding, that flow, that puts me into motion. When I gather glass, I look at it as a really good glue, the best glue in the world. And when I’m able to make stuff that I couldn’t make up beforehand, it makes me understand what glass is.

What is something you can do with glass that you can’t do with other mediums?

Beads and jewelry are still among the most common uses of glass in art and can be worked without a furnace. The invention of plate glass and the Bessemer process allowed for glass to be used in larger segments, to support more structural loads, and to be produced at larger scales. A striking example of this was the Crystal Palace in 1851, one of the first buildings to use glass as a primary structural material. Some works use glass, some don’t, but my training in glass and my love of the material does inform my material choices. Glass is a phenomenological material rich with mineable metaphorical qualities.

Counts studied under Prof. Dick Marquis and Prof. Lino Taliapiatra at the Haystack School of Crafts summer workshop from 1990 into 1991. Counts then became a production glassblower in several California studios from 1984 to 1985 honing his skills. He currently resides in San Marcos, California where he has a studio. In 2015, the Mediated Matter group and Glass Lab at MIT produced a prototype 3D printer that could print with glass, through their G3DP project.

In many cases, the artist will take sheets of glass, break them into smaller pieces, and use the pieces to create new designs. This medium includes artworks that are either partly or entirely made of glass. Works may include glass vases, stained windows, and pieces of jewelry. Yet, it’s not only the objects that are created from glass that are interesting but also the varying methods in which this art can be made.

I wanted to take a moment and pass along a compliment to the install team of my sauna glass wall. We had a few field adjustments we needed to address and they easily overcame those and the overall product looks great. A boomerang best describes Dan Whitacre’s career path.No matter where the flight course led, he always returned to Kroger. Many graduates have already secured prominent job offers, positioning them as leaders in their respective fields upon graduation. Some are even commissioning from ROTC, marking the end of a cadet's career and transition into officerhood. Throughout their academic journey, these graduates have distinguished themselves through their dedication, passion, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House. A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs. “I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest stained glass window is in Justice, Illinois, a mausoleum in Resurrection Cemetery constructed in 1969. The stained glass wall measures 22,381 sq ft, made from 2448 stained glass panels. Colonists from England brought glass art to the United States in the early 1600s. Still, it only flourished in the early parts of the 18th century under the craftsmanship of Caspar Wistar, an immigrant from Germany. Using glass beads, Persia became the forerunner in Islamic glass art in the late Bronze Age (1600 BC). Much later, in the 11th century, Islamic Spain started producing clear glass mirrors.

Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting. While glassblowing once primarily produced functional items such as drinking glasses and jugs, today it has evolved into the creation of decorative objects, or glass art, but it continues a lineage of cultural tradition. Nils Landberg, a pioneer at Orrefors Glasbruk, redefined glass artistry with delicate designs showcased internationally, leaving an enduring legacy. Drew Raskin resides in Carlsbad, California and is Barrio Glassworks Studio Manager. Drew first saw glassblowing when he was 15 years old which led him to find workshops in Seattle and an eventual major in Glass at California College of the Arts in Oakland. He has studied glass with independent artists at Penland, Pilchuk and the Corning Museum of Glass.

Nevertheless, the use of glass for functional and decorative purposes has never ceased to exist, and craft techniques have developed and expanded over the centuries. Fashioning your own artistic creation from glass is an enterprise unlike any other. At Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts, we strive to offer exemplary educational classes and professional studio resources for all skill levels—from the enthusiastic beginner to the seasoned master. The dynamic malleability of glass is one that has captured artisans all over the world, and the creations you can produce are limitless.

Riihimäki Glass, a Finnish factory, produced domestic glassware and window glass. Celebrating creativity and promoting a positive culture by spotlighting the best sides of humanity—from the lighthearted and fun to the thought-provoking and enlightening.

The result is a long list of functional works of art that will endure. Michael Hernandez engages glass and light through sculptural forms and experiential spaces, exploiting the unique abilities to capture time and movement. He explores formal fanaticism through objects that excite the senses in visual play and fetishistic tactility. Inspired by West Coast Funk and alternative folk movements, Hernandez embraces unlikely compositions in color and form where the space between seduction and repulsion is stretched, poked, and ruffled. A connoisseur of craft and masseur of material, his practice moves through experimental excursions of processes, from the technically ambitious to the joyously naïve.
